Erotic Romance without Sex...

...until almost the end of the book.

You may have seen me mention this issue before, but the hero and heroine in my next novel simply would not have sex until the book was almost completed.

Does it still qualify as an erotic romance book? The sex scene is smoking hot, if I do say so myself. Do the number of sex scenes have anything to do with making it erotic romance or not? Even with only one, especially one graphically depicted, I'd imagine it would still have to be considered erotic romance.

Now don't get me wrong. There is sexual tension throughout. It's just these two - well, mainly the heroine - couldn't get over the issues long enough to be vulnerable and intimate until they had gone through hell and made it out the other side.

***EDIT: I should have added above that the sensual intimacy between these two throughout the book is essential for the story and character development, so by that alone it is considered erotic romance. I just think some of us have come to expect more than one sex scene - at least I have. Sylvia Day has a great breakdown for the differences betweeen these types of subgenres.***

I'm finishing the final revisions and will be moving on to editing soon. Still looking at a late spring or early summer release.

So what do you think, is one sex scene enough for an erotic romance novel?

Longing for Surrender (TNSS Book 5)

What can you do when what you long for is what terrifies you most?

Olivia Fournier keeps her immortal heart locked away, determined never to allow another man—another vampire—to rip it to shreds as her sire did. She is the cold-hearted bitch everyone hates, and she likes it that way. The last thing she wants is love… Or is it?

Alexander Mitchell has recently been tasked with leading the fight for vampires’ survival against the growing threat of the Hunters. The last thing he needs is to be distracted by the infuriatingly frustrating Olivia Fournier. Then again, maybe she is exactly what he needs.

Can the pair work together to save their species? Or will Olivia’s trust issues and attempts to undermine Alex’s leadership cause them to lose more than a chance at love, but to lose their lives, as well?

No, one scene (no matter how hot) is enough for an erotic romance to my understanding of the subgenre. I thought the difference between a romance and an erotic romance is that the focus was on the sexual relationship in an erotic romance. It sounds to me like your new book fits more in the regular romance category.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting, Anne.

Even though the hero and heroine don't go full-on until the end, all the sensual intimacy they have throughout the book is an essential part of the story and their character development, so I guess it still is considered erotic romance for that reason. Otherwise it would just be a steamy/sexy romance.

I just think a lot of us have started expecting more than one sex scene in an erotic romance book, and I don't want anyone to feel cheated. Hopefully the build-up makes that final climax ;) worth the wait.
